As a rule of thumb, when working out routes and calculating locks, miles and lift bridges, it is fair assumption that 3 miles can be covered in an hour, 3 locks in an hour and 3 lift bridges in an hour. If you therefore count up the locks, miles and lift bridges and divide by 3, it will give you a rough guide as to how many hours will be needed to navigate your route. This can vary dependant on how many hands you have helping you and how busy certain sections of canals are. In some cases, in the height of the holiday season, there may be queues at the locks.
