No Problem. We will give you full instruction on safe boat operation, how all the facilities work and how to negotiate the various locks, lift bridges and other canal features. You will also be given a Canals and Rivers DVD and canal handbook with your confirmation letter to watch and read at your leisure. This can also be viewed on the Narrowboating DVD page from the drop down menu.
There will be canal maps and guide books available for your use, although this is often something purchased in advance to help plan your holiday. Please choose this option on the Booking Form if you wish to make a purchase. Buoyancy vests are available for all persons on your holiday. Please request these in advance.
Cruising the Canals can be relaxing and fun if you adopt some basic guidelines, some of which, are:-
- Keep your speed to 3-4mph, respecting the wildlife and canal banks
- Pass other boats respectfully and when other boats are moored, reduce speed and pass at idle speed in forward gear
- Canals can be hazardous places so take care on slippery surfaces and be aware of the many obstructions and uneven surfaces, including deep locks
- When going down through locks always keep the rear of the boat forward of the white cill line on the lock wall, otherwise when the lock empties the rear of the boat will catch on the cill and the front will continue to lower, possibly sinking the boat.
A full briefing will be given during handover.
